October 5, 2017 Club Meeting

Thursday, October 5, 2017 at 7:00 PM Red Cross Building, 60 Hawthorne St., Medford, OR (across from Hawthorne Park)

Program: American Woodpecker (Over the Horizon Radar), Scott Cummings, NA7OM

This is not a program on ornithology, but rather radio over-the-horizon radar. During the 1980’s the Soviet HF radar was nicknamed ‘The Woodpecker’ due to the sound it made on a single sideband receiver. It was loud, it was obnoxious, it aggravated many hams.

We will be having the annual election of club officers at the October meeting.

Announced in the October 2017 issue of The Repeater.

Several club members will be bringing test equipment so you can measure the transmit spectrum of your radio and it’s frequency accuracy. We will have a spectrum analyzer and a frequency counter (using a rubidium reference oscillator) available. This is a chance to check your radio against some accurate equipment that you may not normally have access to.

This program is an excellent video recording of the presentation given at the 2016 ARRL / TAPR Digital Communications Conference in St. Petersburg, Florida last September. Mel Whitten, K0PFX walks through (in a non-technical way) what is required to operate digital fast-scan television, equipment setups, what kind of performance he is achieving, and a list of low-cost equipment supplies that make it easy for many hams to get on the air. The performance and range of digital Amateur TV (ATV) signals is significantly better than analog ATV according to Mel’s on-the-air experience.
