June 7, 2018 Club Meeting

Thursday, June 7, 2018 at 7:00 PM New Red Cross Building, 1050A Crater Lake Ave, Medford

  1. How-To: Portable Operating, Allan Taylor, K7GT
  2. Solar Power Basics, John Armstrong, KF7UMK

This How-To program will show portable operations. Allan has a lot of experience in mountain-topping, river rafting, and other adventures where he has brought along Amateur Radio. Allan will discuss antennas, radios, power, packing, etc.

Solar power is used more and more for portable and Field Day operation, in addition to everyday tasks such as maintaining battery charge on infrequently-used vehicles, remote repeater stations, and many others. The program will cover the basics of solar power, charging batteries, and discuss some available products. John will bring along some units for show and tell.

May 3, 2018 Club Meeting

Thursday, May 3, 2018 at 7:00 PM New Red Cross Building, 1050A Crater Lake Ave, Medford

Program:

  1. How-To: Broadband an 80 meter Dipole, Tom McDermott, N5EG
  2. Operating CW, Allan Taylor, K7GT

This How-To program will show several different methods to achieve an acceptable SWR using a dipole across the entire 75 / 80 m band without requiring an antenna tuner.

FT8 CW operation used to the be the main route to ham radio HF operation. CW enjoys a significant performance advantage compared to SSB, and permits contacts with simpler antennas, simpler equipment, and lower power levels. Contesting with CW is usually less stressful than phone due to the narrow bandwidth of CW and narrower receiver filters making the band seem much less crowded.

Allan Taylor, K7GT is the club president and a mostly-CW operator. He is an accomplished CW contester.

Announced in the May 2018 issue of The Repeater.

April 5, 2018 Club Meeting

Thursday, April 5, 2018 at 7:00 PM New Red Cross Building, 1050 Crater Lake Ave, Medford

Program: FT8 and WSJT-X, John Laybourne, W8WOM

RVARC is moving our meeting location to the new Red Cross facility. 1050 Crater Lake Ave. (east side), between Spring St. and E. McAndrews Rd. in Medford. About 6 blocks from our previous location.

FT8 is a new digital mode that has become very popular very quickly. It is much faster than the older JT65 mode, operating on a 15 second cycle rather than a 1 minute cycle. It retains much of the flavor of JT65 (brief pre-canned exchanges and synchronous transmit / receive cycles). WSJT-X is the free program that implements both the DSP software and a nice windows interface. WSJT-X also implements quite other modes which are optimized for different applications, such as meteor scatter and very weak signals.

John Laybourne, W8WOM. John is an active contester and DXer in the Rogue Valley, and is also currently active on new digital modes.

Announced in the April 2018 issue of The Repeater.

March 1, 2018 Club Meeting

Thursday, March 1, 2018 at 7:00 PM Red Cross Building, 60 Hawthorne St., Medford, OR (across from Hawthorne Park)

Program: History of Radar

NOTE: This program was originally scheduled for the February meeting, but due to time constraints was not able to be presented. We have tentatively re-scheduled it for March. If it is not given in March then we will substitute a contingent program on either: Transmitter non-linearity, distortion, and spectral widening, or else a presentation on The use of ferrites to make common-mode feedline chokes. Either of these would perhaps use presentation material written by Jim Brown, K9YC.

Announced in the March 2018 issue of The Repeater.

Thursday, February 1, 2018 at 7:00 PM Red Cross Building, 60 Hawthorne St., Medford, OR (across from Hawthorne Park)

Program: History of Radar, Mike Bach

History of Radar, beginning from World War 2. Mike has access to the MIT Rad Lab journals dating from the time of the invention and industrialization of Radar, an incredible resource. Much of the technology was heavily classified during WW2, and declassified in later years.

Mike Bach currently is an engineer at Scala/Kathrein systems working on antennas. Mike has a wide collection of interesting RF hardware, from HF to Microwave, including high power RF.

January 4, 2018 Club Meeting

Thursday, January 4, 2018 at 7:00 PM Red Cross Building, 60 Hawthorne St., Medford, OR (across from Hawthorne Park)

Program: High Speed Multi Media MESH Networks for Ham Use, John Armstrong, KF7UMK

High Speed Multi Media (HSMM) networking involves the use of the 2.4 GHz amateur band to provide not only point-to-point high speed data links, but also the ability to mesh multiple radios into a network that is resistant against failures. It achieves this by automatically building network routes that can bypass failed radios or RF path outages. John will talk about inexpensive radios and antennas, along with free software that you can use to build your own network node, and to join the existing network in the Rogue Valley.

John Armstrong, KF7UMK is the club secretary for 201, and also a member and founder of the Rogue Hack Lab. He is involved in computer and networking related projects.

Announced in the January 2018 issue of The Repeater.
