March 2, 2017 Club Meeting

Thursday, March 2, 2017 at 7:00 PM Red Cross Building, 60 Hawthorne St., Medford, OR (across from Hawthorne Park)

Program: Fast-Scan Low-Cost Amateur Digital Television, video presentation by Mel Whitten, K0PFX

This program is an excellent video recording of the presentation given at the 2016 ARRL / TAPR Digital Communications Conference in St. Petersburg, Florida last September. Mel Whitten, K0PFX walks through (in a non-technical way) what is required to operate digital fast-scan television, equipment setups, what kind of performance he is achieving, and a list of low-cost equipment supplies that make it easy for many hams to get on the air. The performance and range of digital Amateur TV (ATV) signals is significantly better than analog ATV according to Mel’s on-the-air experience.

Announced in the March 2017 issue of The Repeater.

Meeting Notes

From the April 2017 issue of The Repeater.

The March 2017 RVARC meeting was called to order by President Scott Cummings at 7PM.

A very minimal business portion was held to allow sufficient time for Tom N5EG and the video presentation on digital ATV. We had six (count them, 6 ! ) visitors:

  • Joseph Clarke, W3JVC
  • Darrell Barker, N7CZX (formerly KF7FNV)
  • Charlie Albrecht (no call, yet)
  • Robert Bensel, KI7EQV
  • Ron Bessonette, KI7FQP
  • Anthony Clark (unlicensed, son of Jason KI7ITJ)

N7CZX is the VP of the local Cascades Amateur Radio Enthusiasts (CARE) radio club and came somewhat to mend fences and encourage combined activities, possibly Field Day 2017.

A small donation of gear was received from W4EIN prior to the meeting. He is moving to NY state and leaving the hobby. It consisted of two HTs with power packs and an older iambic keyer.

Bob Deuel gave the treasurer’s report: $4812.51

After this short business portion, Tom N5EG played the video presentation by K0PFX on digital ATV using a DVB-T dongle. A requisite eyeball QSO session and coffee break was held as an intermission to the video.
