Field Day 2012

Field Day 2012, June 23 and 24, 2012

Field Day 2012 is held the fourth full weekend in June; this year that’s June 24 and 25. The event starts at 11 AM on Saturday the 23rd, and continues through to 11 AM on Sunday the 24th.

Thanks to the efforts of Scott and Jeff, we have access to the Table Rock park facility again this year. Those who attended field day last year know what an excellent location this is (well mowed grass, lots of trees and shade, close to town, and flat). We will be joining forces again this year with the Jackson County ARES (JCARES) club.

The best place to drive to the site, and to park is at the Cascade Christian High School parking lot just off of Automation Way. There is no entrance to the park from Table Rock Road.

As was announced at the May meeting, the RVARC has obtained a special event permit from the City of Medford to use Table Rock Park the weekend of June 23 and 24, including overnight camping. The Field Day Committee has put together a preliminary site plan to minimize cross station interference as well as provide a welcome feeling to visitors.

Field Day is a great opportunity for new or inactive operators to get some experience with HF operation, or for more experienced operators to sharpen their skills operating in a challenging environment. Or maybe you would like to learn how to use contest/logging software and digital voice keying. Field Day is also an excellent opportunity to socialize, so even if you have no desire to operate please come out and spend some time with your friends and maybe make some new ones. We will also be joined again this year by our friends from JCARES.

The Rogue Valley ARC and the Jackson County ARES again held a joint field day this year at Table Rock park in Medford. Unlike last year’s spectacular weather, this year it was cool and rainy, a bit unusual for the end of June. After collecting all the logs and documentation for bonus points, we submitted a 3A entry for a total of 3934 points.

I hope everyone has had an enjoyable summer so far, it goes by so quickly. It seems we were just getting ready for Field Day. In spite of unseasonably cold and wet weather, we managed a respectable score this year. Tom McDermott tallied and submitted our final score:

Final totals are:

  • 324 CW QSOs
  • 844 Phone QSOs
  • 54 GOTA QSOs

For a total of 2984 claimed QSO points. We claimed an additional 950 bonus points. For a total of 3934 points.

Considering the poor weather and fewer operators this year, I thought we did pretty well. Our new generators performed flawlessly and should prove indispensable in an actual emergency. I would like to thank everyone who participated in our Field Day effort this year.

Scott gave us the final field day report. He said, “We swept Oregon 3A by being number one in our category.” We were 76 nationwide in our category.
